Roombas use infrared beams to find their dock. The Home Base sends out a wedge-shaped IR signal that the robot's bumper sensor picks up. When the wedge is blocked — by a chair leg, a virtual wall barrier, or even a sunlit floor — the robot can't see the dock and either parks somewhere random or runs the battery flat looking. iRobot's official troubleshooting focuses on three things: dock placement, charging contacts, and starting from the dock.

Quick checks

  • Press the HOME button. The robot should travel back toward the dock. If it sits and beeps, or wanders without finding it, the IR beacon isn't being seen.
  • Look at the dock LED. On most Roomba i, j, s, and 600 series, the dock LED illuminates solid white for about 4 seconds when power is connected, then turns off to save energy. That's normal.
  • Check that the dock is plugged in and the outlet is hot. A blue or white blink, depending on model, means power is fine.
  • Inspect the charging contacts on the dock and the underside of the robot for dust, hair, or oxidation.
  • Confirm the Roomba was started from the dock or within 6 ft of it. Picking it up and moving it during a job confuses its sense of position.

Step by step

  1. Unplug the dock from the wall.
  2. Wipe the metal charging contacts on the dock with a clean cloth or a damp magic eraser. iRobot specifies a lightly dampened melamine foam.
  3. Flip the robot over. Wipe the metal contacts on the underside the same way.
  4. Plug the dock back in.
  5. Place the dock against a wall with at least 1.5 ft of clear floor on each side and 4 ft of clear floor in front. Hard, level surface.
  6. Place the Roomba directly on the dock so the contacts touch. Confirm it starts charging (charging indicator on the robot lights up).
  7. Press CLEAN to start a job. The robot leaves from the dock.
  8. Press HOME mid-job to test docking. The robot should navigate back and seat itself on the contacts.

Dock placement rules

  • Against a wall: not in a corner or under a low ledge.
  • Hard, level surface: thick rugs or shag carpet under the dock cause the robot to climb onto the dock at an angle and miss the contacts.
  • At least 4 ft from any stairs: the cliff sensors flip into avoidance mode near edges.
  • At least 8 ft from any other Home Base or Dual Mode Virtual Wall: the IR beams interfere.
  • Avoid full sun: direct sunlight on the dock or the floor in front of it can mask the IR signal at certain hours.
  • Same room as the cleaning area: moving across thresholds and through doorways multiplies the chance the robot loses its bearing.

If the robot finds the dock but won't charge

  • Look at the contacts. Dust on either the dock or robot blocks current.
  • The metal contacts should be shiny silver. If they're greenish or pitted, gently clean with a magic eraser or a pencil eraser.
  • Confirm the dock LED is steady. Loose power cable at the back of the dock is common.
  • Check the robot battery. Older Roombas (3+ years on daily cleans) need a new battery. iRobot sells replacement Li-ion packs for most models.
  • Try plugging the dock into a different outlet. Some smart outlets cut power when the dock idles, and the robot can't find a dead dock.

Wi-Fi connected Roombas (i, j, s series)

  • If you press HOME in the iRobot Home app and the robot doesn't return, confirm the robot is connected to Wi-Fi (Settings → Wi-Fi in the app).
  • Restart the robot: hold the CLEAN button for 20 seconds until the robot makes a tone, then release. The robot reboots.
  • If the j7 or s9 throws "Error 18 — Docking problem," place the robot on the dock manually and let it charge fully, then run a fresh cleaning job. Most Error 18 cases are dock placement, not a true hardware fault.
  • Update the iRobot Home app and the robot firmware (Settings → About → check for updates).

Older series notes

  • Roomba 500 / 600 / 700: these have no map; they look for the IR beacon. Dock placement matters more.
  • Roomba 800: same beacon-only navigation. Look for the beam to be unobstructed.
  • Roomba e / i series: use vSLAM mapping plus IR. They can map the home and return, but a moved dock invalidates the map.
  • Roomba s / j series: use camera-based navigation. Cover the camera lens lightly and the robot loses its bearing.

If you moved the dock recently

  • The robot's map remembers the old dock location and gets confused.
  • iRobot Home app → tap the robot → Smart Map → update the dock location, or delete the map entirely and let the robot rebuild it on the next training run.
  • The Smart Map only exists on i, j, and s series. 600 and 700 series don't map; just re-dock the robot manually.

When to contact iRobot

  • Charging contacts are clean, dock is placed correctly, robot still won't dock after multiple attempts on different runs.
  • Dock LED doesn't illuminate at all when plugged in; the power adapter or dock electronics may have failed.
  • Robot lands on the dock but the battery doesn't charge.
  • The battery holds charge for less than 30 minutes on a full job; the battery is at end of life.

Good maintenance rhythm

  • Weekly: empty the bin; wipe the charging contacts on the robot and dock with a dry cloth.
  • Monthly: clean the brushes, side brush, and front caster wheel; check for hair around the cliff sensors.
  • Every 2 to 3 months: deep-clean the filter or replace per the iRobot Home app's schedule.
  • Yearly: replace the side brush; check the battery health in the app.
  • Every 2 to 3 years: replace the battery on daily-clean Roombas.
  • Ongoing: keep firmware auto-updates on; iRobot ships navigation fixes through them.
