Roborocks use a combination of LiDAR mapping and an infrared signal from the dock to come home. The LiDAR tells the robot where the dock should be on the saved map; the IR signal handles the final approach. When either piece is off — dock moved, IR window dusty, robot started in a different room — the robot wanders or parks somewhere random. Roborock's official support guidance focuses on clearance, sensor cleanliness, and map accuracy.
Quick checks
- Look at the dock placement. Is it tucked against a wall with clear space on the sides and in front? Roborock specifies 0.5 m sides, 1.5 m front.
- Inspect the IR window on the front of the dock. Dust or fingerprints can block the signal.
- Look at the robot's front bumper sensor — the round IR receiver behind a small window. Wipe clean.
- Check the charging contacts on the dock and the matching pins on the robot's underside. Should be shiny silver, not greenish.
- Look at the robot's app: did you move the dock recently? If yes, the saved map may show the old location.
Step by step
- Pick the robot up and place it directly on the dock. The contacts should touch and the robot should start charging. If it doesn't, the contacts are dirty or the dock is unpowered.
- Unplug the dock. Wipe the front IR signal window with a microfiber cloth (a touch of isopropyl alcohol if there's grime).
- Wipe the charging contacts on the dock with a dry cloth or a pencil eraser if oxidized.
- Wipe the front IR sensor on the robot bumper.
- Wipe the charging pins on the robot's underside.
- Re-seat the dock against a wall with at least 0.5 m clear on each side and 1.5 m clear in front. Hard, level floor.
- Plug the dock back in. Confirm the dock power LED lights.
- Place the robot on the dock; wait for it to charge.
- Open the Roborock app. Start a cleaning job, then press Dock or Home to test the return.
Dock placement rules
- Against a wall, not in a corner: the IR signal needs to project out, not bounce off two walls.
- 0.5 m of clear space on each side: per Roborock's spec.
- 1.5 m of clear space in front: approach lane.
- Hard, level surface: rugs under the dock cause the robot to climb up at a tilt.
- Avoid direct sunlight on the dock: bright sun can wash out the IR signal at certain hours.
- Away from mirrors and reflective baseboards: these can confuse the LiDAR mapping.
Update or rebuild the map
- Open the Roborock app → Map → Edit Map → update dock location, or delete the map.
- If you moved the dock to a different room, deleting the map and letting the robot rebuild on the next cleaning job is usually the cleanest fix.
- For multi-floor homes, confirm the right floor map is active in the app.
- Naming each room helps the robot understand the layout; unnamed rooms can confuse routing.
If the robot finds the dock but doesn't dock cleanly
- The robot approaches but slides off, beeps, and tries again — this is a contact problem.
- Clean the contacts on both the dock and the robot underside.
- If the dock has an auto-empty function, check that the dust bag is seated and the lid latches. A misaligned bin can prevent the robot from docking fully.
- If the robot docks but doesn't start charging, the battery may be at end of life. Roborock batteries last 2 to 3 years with daily use.
If the robot can't find the dock at all
- Started in a different room? Place the robot in the same room as the dock, then press Dock.
- Moved manually during a job? The robot loses its position; let it finish the run, then re-dock.
- LiDAR tower is the spinning piece on top — confirm it's not blocked by hair, dust, or a fallen book. The robot uses LiDAR to know where it is.
- Cliff sensors are the small windows on the bottom front. Dirty cliff sensors make the robot avoid edges incorrectly.
- Restart the robot: hold the power button for 5-10 seconds until it makes a tone, then release.
App-side checks
- Update the Roborock app from the App Store or Google Play.
- Check for robot firmware updates: Roborock app → robot → Settings → Firmware.
- If the robot shows offline in the app but works locally, check the Wi-Fi connection. Roborock requires 2.4 GHz for most models.
- Some Roborock dock errors throw a code in the app (Error 3, Error 11, etc.). Note the code and check the Roborock support page for that specific code.
When to contact Roborock
- Clean contacts, correct dock placement, fresh map — and the robot still can't find the dock.
- Dock LED doesn't light at all when plugged into a known-good outlet.
- Robot docks but doesn't charge, even with new contacts.
- Battery holds charge for under 30 minutes; the battery is at end of life.

Good maintenance rhythm
- Weekly: empty the bin or check the auto-empty dock bag.
- Weekly: wipe the IR signal window on the dock and the front sensor on the robot.
- Monthly: clean the side brush, main brush, and filter; remove hair tangles.
- Every 2 to 3 months: replace or deep-clean the filter per the app's schedule.
- Yearly: replace the side brush; check the LiDAR tower for dust.
- Every 2 to 3 years: replace the battery on daily-clean robots.
- Ongoing: keep app and firmware auto-updates on; Roborock ships navigation fixes through them.
