Whirlpool refrigerators use a single evaporator behind the freezer wall to cool both compartments. Cold air is generated there, then a fan blows it through a duct into the fresh-food section. A motorized damper opens and closes to control how much air goes to the fridge. If the fan dies, the damper sticks, the duct gets blocked, or the coil ices over, the freezer keeps working but the fridge slowly warms up. The freezer often runs colder than usual at the same time because all the cold air is staying down there.
Quick checks
- Freezer feels colder than usual; fridge feels warm.
- No air movement when you put a hand near the rear vents in the fresh-food section.
- Visible frost or ice on the back wall of the freezer.
- Evaporator fan noise (a soft whirring) when you open the freezer is silent or grinding.
- Rear vents inside the fridge are blocked by food, bags, or containers.
- Door doesn't close fully or gasket is torn.
- Recent thaw (you ran the freezer warm during cleaning, or a power outage).
Step by step
- Confirm settings: fridge at 37°F (3°C), freezer at 0°F (-18°C). A button or dial bumped to maximum cool can over-freeze and starve the fridge of air.
- Open the fresh-food section and check the vents on the back wall. Move food away from them. The fridge needs an unobstructed air path.
- Open the freezer and listen. Press the door switch by hand to keep the fan running. A working evaporator fan makes a quiet whir. Silence or grinding is a fail.
- Look at the back wall of the freezer. A thin frost layer is fine. A thick ice sheet covering most of the back wall means the defrost system has failed and the coils are choked.
- If you see heavy ice, you have two paths. Manual thaw: empty both compartments, unplug the fridge, leave doors open with towels on the floor for 8 to 24 hours, plug back in. Within a day the fridge should cool again. But the underlying defrost fault is still there and ice will return in a few weeks.
- Vacuum the condenser coils. On most Whirlpool models they're under the kickplate at the bottom or behind a back panel. Clogged coils degrade cooling.
- Check the door gaskets. Close the door on a dollar bill; if it slides out with no drag, the seal is gone.
- Power-cycle the fridge for 5 to 10 minutes if nothing above applies. This clears software faults after a power outage.
- Wait 24 hours after any change before declaring it fixed. Recovery takes time.
The three likely root causes
- Damper stuck closed. The damper is a flap with a small motor that controls airflow into the fresh-food section. If the motor fails or ice jams the flap, the fridge gets little to no cold air. Replacement is a service-level part on most models but is reachable from inside the fridge cabinet.
- Evaporator fan failed. The fan in the freezer compartment moves air across the coils and through the duct to the fridge. A failed fan motor stops airflow to both compartments, but the freezer keeps cooling by radiation off the cold coils. The fridge needs the airflow.
- Frozen evaporator coil from defrost failure. The defrost heater, defrost thermostat, defrost sensor, or control board has failed. Frost builds up on the coil over weeks until air can't pass through it. The freezer still cools because the coils are still cold; the fridge doesn't because no air moves through the ice.
Less common but possible
- Blocked rear duct. A bag or container shoved against the rear wall vents in the fresh-food section blocks airflow.
- Door left ajar overnight. Heavy ice builds up and chokes the coil; usually clears after a manual thaw.
- Bad door gasket. Warm air constantly leaks in; the system can't keep up.
- Control board fault. The board may not be calling for cooling on the fresh-food side. Less common.
- Sealed-system leak. Usually both sides warm, not one — but a partial charge can show as the freezer working and the fridge not.
When to call for service
- Manual thaw fixed it but ice came back within weeks — defrost system needs repair.
- Evaporator fan is silent or grinding.
- Compressor not running or cycling rapidly.
- Damper motor visibly damaged or stuck (you can sometimes see it through the rear vent).
- Burning electrical smell or visible damage.
- Refrigerant smell (chemical, slightly sweet).
Whirlpool has a long-standing US service network and most independent appliance techs work on Whirlpool. Out of warranty, an independent is usually faster and cheaper. In warranty, file through Whirlpool's customer service so the work is documented.
While you're waiting for the repair
- Move perishables to coolers with ice or to a neighbor's fridge.
- Don't keep opening the fresh-food door — every open lets in warm air.
- Don't load the freezer past 3/4 — it needs room for airflow too.
- If the freezer is also borderline, monitor with a thermometer. Throw out anything that thaws above 40°F for more than 2 hours.
Good maintenance rhythm
- Monthly: glance at temperature display; confirm fridge 37°F, freezer 0°F.
- Monthly: check that rear vents inside both compartments aren't blocked.
- Every 6 months: vacuum condenser coils under the kickplate or behind the back panel.
- Every 6 months: replace the water filter if the model has one.
- Yearly: dollar-bill test the door gaskets on all four sides.
- Yearly: wipe gaskets with mild soap and water.
- Ongoing: leave 2 inches of clearance around the unit for heat to escape.
- Ongoing: don't pile food against the back wall vents.
