Samsung uses a forced-air design where one set of evaporator coils sits behind the freezer wall and a fan blows cold air through ducts into both compartments. When the defrost cycle fails, frost builds up on the coils and chokes airflow. When the evaporator fan dies, no air moves. When the unit gets stuck in Demo Mode (the same mode used in showrooms), the cooling system is off entirely while the display looks normal. Each has a different fix.
Quick checks
- "OF OF" or "O FF" on the display — Demo Mode is active.
- Lights, water, ice dispenser all work but neither compartment cools.
- Visible frost buildup on the back wall of the freezer.
- You don't hear the evaporator fan when the freezer door opens.
- 22E, 22C, or similar code on the display (evaporator fan fault).
- Recent power outage; unit came back up but not cooling.
Step by step
- Look at the display for "OF OF" or "O FF". This is Demo Mode (also called Shop Mode or Cooling Off). To exit on most models, press and hold Energy Saver and Power Freeze together for 5 to 8 seconds, or Freezer and Lighting for the same time. The exact combo is in your model's manual.
- Confirm the temperature setting: fridge at 38°F (3°C), freezer at 0°F (-18°C). If a button got bumped to the warmest setting, that alone can stop effective cooling.
- Listen for the evaporator fan in the freezer. Open the door and press the light switch by hand to keep the fan running. Silence is a fail.
- Look at the back wall of the freezer for ice. A thin frost layer is normal; a thick sheet of ice covering most of the back wall means the defrost system failed.
- Pull the freezer drawer and look for ice in the icemaker fan area too. Samsung French-door models often ice up behind a separate fan that serves the icemaker.
- If you see heavy ice, you have two options. The fast fix: unplug the fridge and leave both doors open for 8 to 24 hours to thaw fully. Towels on the floor. Once empty of ice, plug back in. The fridge should cool again — but the underlying defrost fault will return in a few weeks if you don't have it serviced.
- Vacuum the condenser coils. On Samsung freestanding models the coils are at the bottom behind a kickplate. Clogged coils cut cooling capacity even when everything else works.
- Check the door gaskets on all four sides. The dollar-bill test: close the door on a dollar; if it pulls out with no resistance, the seal is gone in that spot.
- Power-cycle the fridge for 5 minutes if nothing above applies. This clears software glitches that sometimes follow power outages.
- Wait 24 hours after any change before declaring it fixed. The fridge needs time to recover.
If the freezer is cold but the fridge isn't
- Iced-over evaporator coil. Most common cause. Defrost heater, defrost thermostat, or defrost sensor failed. The coils ice up, airflow drops, fridge warms up. Thaw to confirm; service to repair the root cause.
- Evaporator fan failed. The freezer can stay cold from radiant cooling off the coils even with no fan, but the fridge needs air movement.
- Damper or duct failure. A motorized damper opens and closes to route cold air. If it sticks closed, no cold air reaches the fridge.
- Twin Cooling Plus models have separate evaporators for each compartment. If only the fridge side is warm, that side's evaporator or fan failed independently.
Common Samsung cooling error codes
- 22E or 22C: Evaporator fan fault. Fan icing, motor failure, or wiring.
- 5E or 25E: Defrost sensor fault.
- OF OF / O FF: Demo / Shop / Cooling Off Mode. Not a fault — turn it off.
- 83C / 85C: Common sensor faults; service-level.
- Codes vary by model and revision. Note the exact code and search the Samsung support site for your specific model number.
When to call for service
- Frost or ice returning within weeks of a thaw — defrost system needs repair.
- Evaporator fan is silent or grinding.
- Compressor not running (listen at the back) or cycling rapidly.
- Error code on the display that the manual identifies as a sensor or board fault.
- Refrigerant smell (sweet, chemical).
- Visible damage to coils, fans, or the cabinet.
Samsung's first-party service has been heavily critiqued for slow response and parts availability on certain refrigerator models. Out of warranty, an independent appliance tech who works on Samsung is usually faster. In warranty, file through Samsung Care so it's on record.
Good maintenance rhythm
- Monthly: glance at the display; confirm settings and no Demo Mode.
- Monthly: check that vents inside both compartments aren't blocked by food.
- Every 6 months: vacuum the condenser coils (bottom kickplate).
- Every 6 months: replace the water filter if the model has one.
- Yearly: dollar-bill test the door gaskets on all four sides.
- Yearly: wipe gaskets with mild soap and water.
- Ongoing: leave 2 inches of clearance behind and above for heat to escape.
- Ongoing: keep the freezer at least one-third full so cold air has something to hold onto during power blips.
