LE stands for "locked motor error." The washer fires the code when the motor stalls or the rotor position sensor (Hall sensor) reports speeds the control board doesn't expect. On front-load and top-load LG washers, the same code points to the same family of problems, with load weight and foreign objects accounting for most home fixes.

Quick checks

  • Reset: unplug the washer for 15 minutes, then hold Start/Pause for 5 seconds and plug back in.
  • Remove half the load and restart. Heavy bedding (comforters, mats, large towels) is the most common trigger.
  • Open the lid or door and try to spin the drum by hand. If it binds or grinds, something's caught between the tubs.
  • Check the bottom of the drum for coins, bra wires, hair clips, or loose buttons.
  • Confirm the washer is level. A washer rocking on an uneven floor can throw the rotor speed off and trigger LE.

If the reset clears it but LE comes back

The most common pattern is LE on heavy or unbalanced loads. Front-loaders especially struggle with one large bath mat or a single comforter. The fix is to add a second similar item or split the load.

  • Don't wash a single heavy item alone. Pair it with one or two similar-weight items.
  • Avoid mixing one heavy item with many lightweight ones. The drum can't balance.
  • Check the load capacity in the manual and stay under it. Overstuffed drums trip LE on the spin cycle.
  • Re-level the washer with a bubble level on the top edge. Adjust the feet until all four corners sit firm.

If you hear grinding or a rattle

Foreign objects between the inner basket and outer tub are the second most common cause. Coins, bra wires, hair clips, and small toys slip past the drum holes and jam the spin.

  • Unplug the washer first.
  • Reach into the drum and rotate it by hand. Listen for rattles and feel for binding.
  • On front-loaders, look behind the gasket fold for trapped items. Pull the gasket back gently.
  • On top-loaders, shine a flashlight under the agitator or impeller and look around the drum base.
  • Use long pliers or tweezers to remove anything you can see. If the object is wedged out of reach, that's a service call — the drum may need to come out.

If the drum spins freely but LE still fires

When the load isn't the problem and nothing's jammed, the failure is electrical. Common causes include a failed Hall sensor on the motor (the part that reports rotor position), a loose or damaged wire harness between the motor and control board, or a worn-out direct-drive motor stator. These are not DIY repairs on most LG models — the motor sits below the tub and requires partial disassembly.

  • If LE fires before the spin cycle starts, the motor probably isn't turning at all. Likely a sensor or wiring issue.
  • If LE fires only on high-speed spin, the motor is starting but can't reach speed. Likely a weak motor or load imbalance.
  • If LE fires immediately at power-on, with no spin attempt, the control board may be reading a sensor fault. Reset, then call for service if it repeats.
  • UE or Ub: unbalanced load. The drum can't even out the weight during spin. Rearrange or add items.
  • OE: drain error. The pump filter or drain hose is clogged or kinked.
  • FE: overfill. Usually a stuck water inlet valve.
  • dE: door error. The lid or door isn't latching fully.
  • tE: heating error. The water heater or sensor is faulty.

When to call for service

  • LE returns after reset and after removing weight, with the drum spinning freely.
  • You can hear the motor humming but the drum isn't turning.
  • You see scorch marks, smell burning plastic, or notice water around the motor.
  • An object is visible between the tubs but you can't reach it.
  • The washer is under warranty — LG warranties the direct-drive motor for 10 years on most models, so a stator failure may be a covered repair.

Good maintenance rhythm

  • Every load: check pockets for coins, keys, and hair clips before starting.
  • Monthly: run a tub clean cycle (or hot wash with washer cleaner) to clear residue around the drum seal.
  • Monthly: wipe the door gasket fold dry on front-loaders to prevent debris collection.
  • Yearly: verify the washer is level — check all four feet with a bubble level.
  • Yearly: clean the drain pump filter on front-loaders.
  • As needed: pair single heavy items (comforter, bath mat) with similar-weight laundry to balance the spin.
  • Ongoing: don't overload the drum past the manual's stated capacity.
