The ice maker is a small assembly in the top of the freezer that fills a mold with water, freezes it, then ejects cubes into a bin. The cycle repeats every 90 minutes or so when the bin isn't full. If water never reaches the mold, no ice. If the freezer is too warm, the cycle stalls. If the bin is jammed or the sensor thinks the bin is full, the cycle won't restart. The fixes are mostly easy and don't need a tech.

Quick checks

  • Ice maker on/off switch is in the On position (a small slider or button inside the freezer).
  • Wire arm (older models) is in the down position; sensor eye (newer models) is clean and unblocked.
  • Ice bin isn't jammed with old ice or pushed out of position.
  • Water filter is less than 6 months old.
  • Water dispenser still produces water at normal flow.
  • Freezer is between 0 and 5°F (-18 to -15°C).
  • Refrigerator is level (a tilted fridge can affect the ice mold).
  • Water supply valve under the sink is fully open.

Step by step

  1. Open the freezer and find the ice maker switch. On most Frigidaire models it's a slider on the front of the ice maker or a button labeled On/Off. Confirm it's On.
  2. Look at the wire arm (on older models). If it's stuck up, the ice maker thinks the bin is full and won't cycle. Push it down. On newer models with a sensor eye, wipe the small lens with a damp cloth.
  3. Pull the ice bin out and confirm it's empty enough. Old ice clumped at the bottom can hold the sensor in the "full" position.
  4. Test the water dispenser if your model has one. Fill a glass. Normal flow means water is reaching the fridge; weak or no flow points to the filter or supply.
  5. Replace the water filter if it's been more than 6 months or you don't know when it was last changed. This is the single most common fix.
  6. Check the freezer temperature with a thermometer. Aim for 0 to 5°F. Above 10°F and the ice maker won't cycle reliably.
  7. If you just installed the fridge or just changed the filter, give the ice maker 24 hours to make the first batch. New units also need to be primed: dispense water through the door for a few minutes to clear air from the line.
  8. Look behind and under the freezer for the water supply line. Feel along it for ice — a frozen supply line is a common cause, especially if the freezer is set very cold or the line dips behind a wall.
  9. Confirm the water supply valve under the kitchen sink is fully open. A partial-open valve gives weak flow that the ice maker can't use.

If the water dispenser works but ice maker doesn't

  • Ice maker turned off. Easy miss after cleaning the freezer.
  • Frozen fill tube. The short plastic tube that delivers water into the mold can ice up if a previous cycle dripped. Thaw with a hair dryer on low.
  • Ice maker module failed. The small electric motor that drives the harvest cycle can wear out. Replacement is a service part.
  • Bin sensor stuck. Wipe the sensor eye or work the wire arm.

If no water reaches the fridge at all

  • Filter clogged. Replace it.
  • Supply valve under the sink closed or partially closed. Open fully.
  • Saddle valve clogged with minerals. Older homes have small saddle valves on the cold-water line; they clog over time. Replace with a quarter-turn shutoff during a plumbing visit.
  • Water inlet valve on the fridge failed. The solenoid valve at the back of the fridge opens to admit water. Failed solenoid means no fill. Service part.
  • Water line kinked. Pull the fridge out and check the line for crushed sections.

If the freezer is too warm

  • Check the freezer temperature setting; aim for 0°F.
  • Confirm the freezer door seals fully on all sides.
  • Vacuum the condenser coils underneath or behind the unit; clogged coils warm everything up.
  • Check that vents inside the freezer aren't blocked by food.
  • A freezer above 10°F won't make ice reliably regardless of the ice maker's condition.

If you just installed the fridge

  1. Confirm the saddle or shutoff valve at the supply is open.
  2. Run the water dispenser for 3 to 5 minutes to clear air from the line. Air locks are the #1 cause of "ice maker not working after install."
  3. Wait 24 hours for the first batch.
  4. Some Frigidaire models ship with the ice maker switch in the Off position. Check it.
  5. Confirm the freezer has reached 0°F before judging.

When to call for service

  • Filter, supply line, freezer temperature all check out and still no ice after 48 hours.
  • Visible water leak from the fridge.
  • Ice maker module is cracked or making grinding noises.
  • Bin sensor or wire arm is broken.
  • Error code on the display.
  • Fridge is under warranty (file through Frigidaire so it's on record).

Frigidaire's owner support site has model-specific ice maker articles. The model number is on a sticker inside the fridge (usually on the side wall or behind the crisper drawer). Look it up before calling — having the model number speeds up the call.

Good maintenance rhythm

  • Every 6 months: replace the water filter on schedule.
  • Every 6 months: check the supply line behind the fridge for kinks or moisture.
  • Every 6 months: vacuum the condenser coils.
  • Monthly: wipe the ice bin and let it air-dry occasionally to prevent clumping.
  • Monthly: confirm freezer temperature with an inexpensive thermometer.
  • Yearly: dollar-bill test the freezer door gasket.
  • Ongoing: don't pile food against the ice maker or block the freezer vents.
  • Ongoing: turn the ice maker off if you're going on vacation longer than a week.
